Lucky for us an engine's worthiness is not dictated by the redline then, huh?
The engine is very good and has already won many awards, so experts on the matter seem to disagree with you. And v6 v8 are not "supposed" to have any particular redline. This is what audi wanted to meet their goals and it works.
Porsche's v10 carrerra gt redlines at 8400 so I guess bmw's motor sucks in comparison, huh?

this a3 with 382hp dsg is much faster then a stock rs4..
+ A3 is much lighter, 1330kg vs 1650kg
(3,48kg/hp vs 3,93kg/hp)
+ A3 has dsg (much faster)
+ rs4 not always has his 420hp in reality
8250rpm, whatever.. rs4 without turbo is worthless..
