naa i recon something, be it his wife leaving him or w.e, has totally devastated him. The Timer is the clock to his suicide and the explosion represents him jumping off the balcony. "I've got something on my chest and i..." need to get it off he was going to say. As in he needs somebody to talk to about his problems, but theres nobody, he can't find the phone, hes got no friends, 911 or 999 w.e don't want to know about his shit (lol), so the count down continues until BAM. hes dead.

Or it just symbolizes that he cant stop this thing without killing himself. Yeah, it could really be himself, but I think he aquired something he really wanted to aquire first but now lost control over it. So he made it take over his life, it didnt take it over on its own. But in the end he cant change his decision.
