its alright, but in many ways yes, others no. A diode doesn't give off light, it only allows electricity to flow 1 way (it takes AC and makes it DC)

Nah, AC polarity changes 50 times a second (the stuff you'd find in mains voltage), so putting a diode there would only stop the electricity from flowing one way, so you'd only get a current 50 times a second. Attach it to a speaker to get a nice humming noise though...

You can solve that flashing problem by using a filament bulb instead of an LED. LEDs only allow electricity one way through, Filament bulbs allow it both ways, but will give off a small amount of light as they cool down just after the current stops, so it won't flicker like the LED, which stops instantly.
