i saw derek trucks live and he blew my mind. i can't think of a modern guitarist who has that much soul and skill. i hope he comes back by sometime soon. definately the best live show i've ever seen.

for fuck's sake, can people stop comparing him to duane allman? yes, they both play slide, and derek took over duane's spot in the ABB. that's pretty much where the similarity ends. it's like saying SRV is just like robert johnson because they both play blues guitar. if you really want to split hairs, if the two of them could cut heads, duane would get smoked in terms of technique and clarity of expression. if you want to say you personally like duane better, fine, but they're nothing alike.

i also agree with jedopah, and i also like how you recognize how much better (at least) technically derek trucks is....and from there on, there is practically NOTHING you can compare with the two with without it being a matter of opinion....personally, i think duane is a legend, but derek trucks is the most moving guitarist that we will see for a long time...his buildups will have you going wild, and he draws out each note to perfection....they were both great, but derek's my man

The thing that everyone has to remember is that duane only lived till he was 23 the amount he accomplished and his influence he had was ridic for how long he was around especially his influence on derek but i dont compare whos better because its not about that

they are alike dude. they play with feelng and compassion. it doesn't matter who is "technically better" they play what they feel, and that's what matters. they play what sounds right, they connect with the listener, and they strive to do things that express themselves.

I disagree. I think there is a clear connection between Duane and Derek, and that is the spirituality in their music.
As a Duane disciple, I don't have a problem acknowlidging that Derek has surpassed him technically. Indeed, the rest is obviously more subjective.
Derek is standing on the shoulders of Duane, who created something new: organic rockmusic unheard of up to then.
Way to go Derek; RIP Duane.
