Also in Indonesia, an attempt to illegally smuggle over a hundred rare shells out of Bali was foiled last week. It appears that the final destination for the rare cargo was New Caledonia. Here's more from our correspondent.
STORY: Over one hundred shells were confiscated at the Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali last week. Airport customs officers found the illegal cargo after they X-rayed the contents of a few shipping parcels destined for overseas. Some of the confiscated shells, including two rare species, are wildlife-
protected, but some shells were not. [Istanto Dwi Matoyo, Conservation Official]: "I think these shells do not originate from Bali's oceans. I suspect these are from Sulawesi and Maluku, as they are biggest places that products sea shells." An investigation is underway to determine the identity
of the smugglers. [Istanto Dwi Matoyo, Conservation Official]: "We haven't identified the perpetrators and this case is still under investigation. We plan to question the cargo company in charge of the shipping, to find out who the sender and owner were." The penalty for shell smuggling carries a
one to five year sentence and a maximum fine of $20,000. NTD, Bali, Indonesia.
