Im not familiar with Carl Palmer, but id guess he's got a pretty decent Buddy Rich Influence, his snare is tilted forward similarly to rich's as well, as his intricate double-stick single-cymbal techniques.

Met Carl Palmer (briefly) at a show in Hungary in the summer. My band was playing the same concert. I now know why they say 'never meet your idols'. I've met loads of top muso's but none have made me feel stupid. It really put me off him. His solo and concert was just a wall of noise. The young muso's he has are spectacular but all you can hear is him. He approaches the drums like it's a session down the gym. Not musical at all. I really hope he develops some humility in his old age.

One of the best? I'm just not seeing it....sorry folks. It doesn't flow or have any direction to me. Yeah, he's got skills but he doesn't seem to go anywhere. Not very creative compared to a few others that rank up there.

He is one of the top drummers but this doesen't show his drumming quality! It's just skill, no artistic feeling! Still one of the best, along others like John Bonham, Keith Moon....

That's because he was always a single bass drummer until much later in his career. He does it for show. He is much better on one bass drum anyway. I saw ELP many times from 1971 on and he always used only one in those days. He only needs on. Two take away from his impact.

Speed and gimmicks are what too many of todays drummers rely on .Double bass drum kicks seems to be their main aim.They lack the feel and rhythm of the great jazz drummers. I am not a jazz fan,by the way,but I admire their brilliant drummers, most of them playing on basic kits.

Having made my comments, I do think Carl Palmer is one of the better drummers around today. Certainly a Buddy Rich influence is there ,except for the gimmicks.
