Her lyrics and voice are haunting and very gifted! I am not gay but it really doesnt matter really does it? Even if you dont like her music you have to respect that someone else does. the coach is pete adkins. He was the coach of my high school in Jefferson City Missouri. He has more wins than any other coach in high school history. And melissa etheridge did NOT write this song. It was written by a band called Greenwheel from St. Louis. I personally like their version better but i always think the original is better

I think it's suppose to be the retired coach refleckting on his live of football and missing it. I'm guessing it was his whole life and now that part of his life is over and it hurts and he feels empty. He is longing to be "home", on the football field again.
