OM is the sound that was heard during the big-bang creation of the universe. It is also called Naad-Brahma. This is the way it is understood in Hinduism.
Many prayers in both Hinduism and Buddhism start with Om. As a breathing exercise the pronunciation of Om is STRETCHED upto the length of the breath which sounds as: OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
