Totally agree nickarr - I seen it when it was first released and I saw a pathos due to fading youth/ and perhaps unfufilled paternal instincts and i still feel that interpretation now decades later.

when i saw this movie for the first time, i was still a high schooler. i couldn't bear fear of that man's loneliness, and i couldn't sleep in that night. a concept of the true beauty is cruel and fear.

The movie is not about beauty or age!The dialogue between the two friends-artists at the beginning shows that it is about what is good and what life should be about.Just the boy shows that goodness is beyond race,gender etc it makes you young,beautiful,healthy and sometimes the society can't stand you!Platonic love was about what someone should admire.By the way i am 500% man.

I do wonder if Burt Lancaster (who asked for it) might have pulled off this role better than Dirk "Sliced Ham" Bogarde. Mahler is the true star of this film.
