God, how I LOVE listening to that guitar vibrato that gets the song off to a great start and stays with it all the way to the end!!

i was always under the impression morrissey was the vocalist. and whilst both he and marr contributed to production, stephen street produced this song. and finally, the 'AWESOME sound' you refer to is commonly known as the bo diddley beat, after blues artist bo diddley who invented it in the early 50's and pulled it off with equal success.

To "billyshitcheese": I completely see your point, AND agree with you. SO much of what musicians have been doing for decades has been based on the pioneers like Bo Diddley.
My point was that The Smiths created the very special vibrato you hear through an EXHAUSTING process of "washing" the guitar sounds through the Fender Twin Reverbs to create that special sound that most people recognize this song by. They, alone, deserve the credit for the unique SOUND in this song.
