Presentació del reacTable a Barcelona
The reactable, is a state-of-the-art multi-user electro-acoustic music instrument with a tabletop tangible user interface. Several simultaneous performers share complete control over the instrument by moving physical artefacts on the table surface and constructing different audio topologies in a kind of tangible modular synthesizer or graspable flow-controlled programming language.
The reactable hardware is based on a translucent round table. A video camera situated beneath, continuously analyzes the table surface, tracking the nature, position and orientation of the objects that are distributed on its surface, representing the components of a classic modular synthesizer. These objects are passive without any sensors or actuators, users interact by moving them, changing their position, their orientation or their faces (in the case of volumetric objects). These actions directly control the topological structure and parameters of the sound synthesizer. A projector, also from underneath the table, draws dynamic animations on its surface, providing a visual feedback of the state, the activity and the main characteristics of the sounds produced by the audio synthesizer.

...dude, I'm an aetheist. I don't believe that we will ever stop war. but our numbers will continue to increase, and that's all that matters to me in the end, sure we will start destroying planet after planet, but it lowers the chance of us wiping ourselfs out...unless we get a paralel universe to combine with ours, then physics is screwed.

I think that you need to expand your definition of music. Too bad that a genious man like Karlheinz Stockhausen has gone away some days ago...

I'm sure that it takes a genius to create this stuff, but to me, it sounds like background noise. It isn't pleasing in the least, and expanding my definition of music isn't going to change that fact.
I meant that you ... ( 11 months ago by Roswellsounds)
I meant that you needed to expand your definition for yourself, not for others to listen. If you don`t enjoy this kind of music, that`s all right.
But you can`t say: "I wouldn`t call this music". Subjetive opinions are not interesting, specially if you talk about something as abstract as music.

I tend to agree with brainfork here. The problem is the table is so rare yet that very few good artists have gotten to use it. The Bjork videos, btw, weren't very impressive to me when it comes to this table. The mixer looks like he just has one sample up and that's mostly what you hear, the few frequency changes you could hear weren't very interesting.

you're both right, ... ( 9 months ago by comeonthunder)
you're both right, I'm currently in the process of building my own reactable, and have done alot of research into it, the amount of sounds it can make is, theoretically infinite, but it will take some getting used to, and the instrument is fairly new and very rare. I imagine that soon it could be used as a stand alone instrument in places like clubs. You can see how difficult it is to play from watching, it all depends on where the blocks are places, the angle they're at etc.

XD I sounded so stoned when I made that comment, seriously though cause i said aetheist people downvoted the comment, that's just sad people. you need to do reasearch to know what I meant, I was replying to someone else.

i could listen to that all day long.. but i dont think the neighbours would like it. they are old and listens to opera. me on the other hand, i love this kind of sci-fi music.
It's only a matter ... ( 8 months ago by jrbuuck)
It's only a matter of time until someone masters the reactable and creates a symphony on it. To those who say it just makes noise... Well, so does an electric guitar or violin or saxophone if you don't know how to play it. This is still vey new. Most of the concert videos are of people just playing around or experimenting. I've heard someone play Bach on a Theramin and it was exuisite. Just wait.

The argument is/is ... ( 7 months ago by Flugulate)
The argument is/is not music is pointless and tiresome. The "open your mind" argument is defensive.
No one will master this any more than anyone raelly mastered the theramin. The interface is too maluable.
The early Moogs had the same problem. The synth was useless until it became a keyboard instrument.
That said, I'd love to noodle with this toy!

check out bjork's live stuff, she has a reatable guy who does some pretty amazing stuff, I thought it looked a bit difficult to get something useable but was well surprised. think the tracks live on jools holland but theres a live gig one too. Nuff rambling for now

What an odd flow of words in relation to making noise and music. I make my music without keyboards and yet is is somehow music non the less. You have let yourself be weighed down by the gravity of "reality". Liberate yourself and you could just find yourself creating music from pretty much nothing.
I guess you better ... ( 7 months ago by Flugulate)
I guess you better define music for me, willingpassenger. Otherwise your comment doesn't go anywhere. Really "the gravity of reality." Let's not be silly.

I don't know about arguments as to this being art/music or not...
But god damn it sounds like crap.
Take away the visual, you have an agonizing clash of alien sounds. Like a HAM operator's attempt at Jazz.
Not saying it's not music. Just saying that if it is music, it's crap.

You're right dude! highest respect for the technology - however, were these used for the sound effects in 'Contact' starring Jodie Foster?
i'm sure some dudes will be ripping dope sounds on these sooner rather than later though! chur
