Asimov's comment ... ( 2 months ago by upchuck69)
Asimov's comment about needing a world government sounds nice on paper. I'm not against the concept per se, but putting the power of the planet into a few select hands makes me very nervous especially if we end up with a corrupt Bush-like regime.
The fate of this planet starts with you and me making the right personal choices. Not some worldly bureaucrat telling us what we can and can't do.

The movie had very little to do with the book.
If they made a movie truly based on his short stories it would probably turn out to be vastly superior to the Will Smith film.

As far as I understood the speech, he didn't want a world government of just a few selected individuals, but a government that consists of many representatives of all countries, and then acts together. That's not nearly as scary thought as that of a single corrupt leader, don't you think?
It wasn't just ... ( 1 month ago by upchuck69)
It wasn't just George Bush that was corrupt, it was his whole regime. My point is that an elected a world government, regardless of how many representatives acting together, may initially work for the people but human nature will ultimately take over and they will eventually end up working for special interests (i.e. money).
Asimov may be right in principle about a world government but he overlooked the corruption factor.

Which asimov short story would you want to see on the screen? I'm gunning for 'In a good cause'
Not sure if it will impress me more than the story though

I think "Nightfall" would be something worth seeing on screen. Mostly because the visuals of an angry mob coming to kill all the scientists would be great to see.
I think "In a Good Cause" would end up being portrayed too similarly to other popular science fiction series like Star Trek or Babylon 5. Not to say it wouldn't be potentially commercially successful but I'd rather see science fiction break out of its mold on the screen.

The only way to do ... ( 4 days ago by falconlem01)
The only way to do this is to enforce environmental laws, which isn't done. The carbon market is a fraud. Neither Russia nor China will stop industrialization, because they are both Communists at heart. Until they get on board we are all spinning our wheels. The quickest solution is fuel cell cars running off hydrogen and fusion reactors, more funding in both areas is the key. Plus end rain forest destruction of course.
the greatest ... ( 1 day ago by quietAtheist20)
the greatest scientific event of 1988...... i was born....... yeah right, i had to put that in. but seriously now. in grade 11 earth science class i read that algae/other sea plants micro and macro is a very contributing factor with getting rid of carbon and making oxygen about 45% of earth oxygen production. And 55% from trees and land plants. i've never heard Asimov speak until now but i've always loved his books and now i'll be looking for more vids of him. he raises many need to do points.
