I think it's just that I'm not used to the 56's, or maybe I just got a bad batch, but sometimes when I sustain a note, I break. So I prefer V-12's but I do use 56's just to try and get used to them.

yeah it takes a while to get used to. V12 will enable you to play easier, but 56's can make you stable even in high registers. Your tone may change also.

that happens to me everytime i watch a great video of musicians. but think of it this way: are you going to get better by saying you never will? i know it sounds cheesy, but if you want to play like the best musicians, listen to the best, watch the best, imitate the best.imitating/watching people worse than you will only make you sound worse.

Imitation can only get you so far, and you also need to have that... "Spark" for it.

I play 6 insturments. On my clarinet I sound more like Barney Bigard than Artie Shaw is what I am told. On my alto sax I sound a little bit like Johnny Hodges.

wow. dude just cause someones better than you it doesnt mean its a waste of time. there wil always be someone better than you. wethere its now or later. so it doesnt make sense to me that you look at it that way. i think what makes you be great is to contribute to the art. bring something new or improve the standards of what you do. thats what i think the great musicians did. and just cause your not better than him now doesnt mean you cant be great...

I can't help but wonder, because there were so many in each band, what these guys made for a living and what the bands charged per show and how much it cost to see them play. Any leads are appreciated.

The average show on broadway cost anywhere from $0.30-$3.40, movies were $0.20-0.30, so his shows could have cost anywhere from $0.05-$4 at a premium. With 1940 things were still ramping up out of the great depression, you had a world war going on and not too many people could afford much with wartime rationing either. Going to see him would have been a luxury in some cases. Best lead I could find hope it helps.
