I agree thoroughly with you Mary Hopkins vis a vis Dana. On the other point IMO no matter how good a singer and their performance, it cant or shouldnt compensate for a song that's not up to scratch (not a reference to Knock Knock...)

I took up these issues below with Lewis. In the song vs performance debate only the good song should win out, but I'm sure doesnt always. To me Ruslana was a case in point: a great performance of an only ok song. I believe performance won the day then.

I suppose a case of where a good song was inhibited by not good singing was Raggio di Luna in 1979. I think Celine gave a great performance of a 'goodish' song with little competition whereas Corinne gave an amazing performance of a really good song with 2 or 3 really good songs good in close competition.

Your absolutely right on this point ...
There were much better songs for Mary to sing in the "6 British songs for Europe" that were put forward in 1970 "can I believe" And "you've everything you need" I honestly think if she had sung one of these the outcome could have been different!
I think the UK should also go back to this format for choosing a song, pick the artiste and invite sonwriters to write for that singer.

Great! In this year, I saw her at a live held in the EXPO '70 Osaka. Mary is the sweetest sweetheart of mine forever. My ticket was for the frontest center. I reserved about one year before the live and the ticket was I remember JYE 3,000 per a seat (around Euro 24 at recent rate). Thanks a lot. Sincerely, Tomoya Kuramochi, Hidaka City Japan.

Þ A nice song with an even better performance. I agree that while Dana's song was possibly a stronger winner, Mary was the better singer. It would have been very interesting to see the voting that year with the current voting system, to see how tightly the top-3 would battle it out.
