There are a lot of myths about the Walled City - one of which is that the police never patrolled the area. This is wrong. I was a PTU Commander in the early 80s and we mounted patrols in the Walled City every day. What I witnessed was a community trying to survive and make a living in cramped conditions. Also, the triad presence was minimal. Certainly, the conditions were poor but crime was no worse then the rest of urban Kowloon.

i know someone who frequently visited kowloon, though, who told me that in one particular section there was a lot of illegal activity (prostitutes, drug dens, etc), and that law enforcement was pretty much nonexistent in that area...though, this was in the 1960s-70s.

My experience is from the early 80s. Certainly the Walled City had drug addicts, but you could find them anywhere in Kowloon. As regards the prostitutes, I don't remember much activity as most operated in Yaumati and Mongkok.

When you see videos of it, although it has a certain amount of industrial charm, it's easy to understand why the demolished it. That place was a serious hazard zone for many reasons. Many lives were at risk there.

It was built as a protective outpost hundreds of years ago. It was never meant to be a civilian city.

Thank you for the video. It recalls me my childhood, until 5 years old. Lots of good memories, even if it's considered as an "unsafe" and "poor" area for the others. "Poor" doesn't mean that they had everything free. They have to work hard to get everything. Ex : the balconies that we have seen at the beginning of the video were very expensive.
