Uploaded by: UISTMAN59
Video Description:
A song by the late, great Canadian folk singer Stan Rogers, from his album, 'For the family' from 1983 or so. Garnet Rogers play the solo fiddle piece. I didn't get enough pictures to do justice to the song. Hope you like it anyway. Buy the album, there are many great songs on it.

Alternatively there is Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve - one of Newfoundland's major seabird colonies - about 200 km southwest of St. John's. Either way , it is a great song.

Great video. These lyrics have gained international acclaim. The story as I know it was Otto Kelland was a homesick fisheman sailing on a schooner out of New England. The skipper of the schooner told him that if he could write him a song that he liked, he would provide passage for him back home.

Hello,
My name is Ariana Kelland , Otto Kellands youngest grand daughter. He was born in Lamaline in 1904 and died in 2004 just before his 100th birthday. The song was written about a homesick fishermen not himself. He wrote it while wokring at the St. John's pennatentury at which he was a warden.

Hi everyone. stan was singing about Cape St. Mary's on the island of Newfoundland. This song was written by my father Otto Kelland in 1946. There are nicer versions of the song by Ryans Fancy and Con O'Brian to name two. Thanks to anyone who sings or plays my dad's song it would make him happy to know people enjoy it so much.

Thanks dorydulle. Mac Campbell has alrady highlighted this was about Cape St. Mary's on the eastern headland of Placentia Bay in Newfoundland. What relation are you to Ariana Kelland? Much as I like Ryan's Fancy, this is my favourite version.

No. It is Cape St.Marys in Placentia Bay.
The author was a prison guard at HMP St.John's.
It is argued that the music is form a wwestern movie. I found a very old English tune with the same rifts.
It is lovely.
