1991 Worlds Tonya Harding - Ladies SP

Uploaded by: k9henrydog
Video Description:
A year before, Holly Cook stunned by winning a bronze in her first year at Worlds. Here Tonya takes second, and Nancy Kerrigan third in their first appearances, sweeping the podium with Kristi Yamaguchi!
To my mind, she is still the only American lady to land a triple axel in competition. The axel is the KING of Jumps, and should include great height and distance, as Tonya's do. When you jump up in the air, turn 3 and half turns, and still land in the same spot you jumped from, I am not sure what jump you are doing, but it is not an axel. And how much cheat, can you allow on a landing?
Tonya's ban from skating, and denial of a living in the sport far exceeded the authority of a governing sports body. Had she actually committed the assault in question, she would only have been given 8 months in jail and community service! The USFSA and the entire skating industry is still counting the money they made off Tonya and Nancy. To continue to deny her true place in the sport is both hypocritical and self-righteous.

Uhh..self-righteous and exceeding authority?
Tonya freaking conspired with her, now,ex-husband to injure Nancy Kerrigan her teammate.
Here's some cold hard truth for you:
prove it in court!! ... ( 10 months ago by k9henrydog)
prove it in court!! No one else could, or ever has since.....but that is of no bearing in the consideration of her skating talents, contributions, and position in the panoply of figure skating great!!
Why are we so ... ( 10 months ago by ncsapianist)
Why are we so passionate about Tonya? I've been a fan of her SKATING forever. Is it because its authentic? Explosive? Exciting? Not sure. What a virtuoso of a skater. We'll do coffee ...

Oh....there were a few posts that i didn't like the tone of, so i deleted them...this comment line doesnt make any sense anymore!! sorry....This issue is obviously still a sore spot with a lot of people, 15 years later. A guess a wise person would let sleeping dogs lie....maybe for 15 more years!!! lol A great many other horrible things have been done in skating, and glossed over...not this apparantly. best wishes

yes let this thing now where it belongs: in the past and enjoy her skating!

I don't know if Tonya's guilty or not, though I suspect she is. She did plead guilty to obstruction. I just know the skating world was worse for all of that crap. The sport is just not the same for me. I prefer to remember Tonya as she is here.
Amen to that!!! I ... ( 9 months ago by k9henrydog)
Amen to that!!! I do think it's important to Nancy Kerrigan to find forgiveness in her heart.....for all those involved. It would be a great moment for skating if BOTH of them could be admitted to the Skating Hall of Fame, on the same evening!!!!
dude...she paid to ... ( 4 months ago by keremyeah)
dude...she paid to have her opponent crippled, and went on to become an amateur porn star. she has said some horrible things. what do you expect?
Well....if we ... ( 4 months ago by k9henrydog)
Well....if we arrested everyone in skating who said 'some horrible' things, then we couldn't even field a team for Worlds...in Ladies, or any event! I had not heard that she 'paid' to have Nancy whacked. The system corrupted a young skater who was at 'moral hazard'! It happens to all of us, at some point....till we learn to make correct choices. This was a drama of Shakespearian porportion, and it captivated the world. I still think there is a Broadway musical in this material somewhere! lol
I think it is ... ( 3 months ago by lambielkwanfan)
I think it is important to realize though she did make a comeback to pro competition in 1999. Then she decided on her own to leave skating and get into more personal problems. She never sticks at anything.
Yes, she is in and ... ( 3 months ago by k9henrydog)
Yes, she is in and out of the media (for good and bad)...and still a great many people care for her. It's hard to understand that a great skater, can love skating so much that she will develop herself into such a champion, but then contemptiously walk away from it. Perhaps she loved fame more than the ice. It just does strike me as such a loss for skating, and her. She cut herself out of the 'circle of life'....as manifested by skating.
it happens to all ... ( 3 months ago by keremyeah)
it happens to all of us? most athletes don't cripple their opponents and there's no excuse for it.
True and you are ... ( 3 months ago by k9henrydog)
True and you are correct...I was just pointing out that all of us face a moment in skating when we either play along with the silly games, or we stand on our own moral character and let life happen (which is the best choice).I did some things (and had some things done to me) that I am not proud of....and unfotunately cannot take back! If Tonya's legacy encourages skaters to make those 'right' choices more often, then she serves a purpose of making the world a better place...so I can't hate her.

in what way? they were fine spirals for the period....i kind of liked the toe tap and ina bauer!! But it must have been before the 3 second rule, fer sure!! We have yet to prove that these 'freakish' spirals of today are not harmful to skaters....they seem to be an unfair limitation on skating participation. Un-natural flexibility should not be a prerequisite for the sport....best wishes

i don't mind the fact that she's not incredibly flexible. she just doesn't hold the positions long enough. they seem to be throw-away moves for her. i've always loved tonya's ina bauers. the best in the business.

Your guess is as good as mine. It was Tonja's first appearance...I guess we should be grateful she ranked 2nd. Things usually don't work out so well. As I recall, she landed a great triple axel in her long, but missed some other triples. Overall, I would agree Kristi was the winner that year....best wishes

She landed the axel in her LONG program, this was just the short! I am sure it is posted by someone on YOUTUBE! Search for it....anyone who has it could link here as a video response!! best wishes

Thanks. I saw the long program one. It's just that I read somewhere that she was the first woman to do it during a short program and I wanted to see.

mmmm....that is an acheivement that I don't seem to have stuck in my (now frequently) head. I would suspect that honor belongs to Midori Ito, but maybe if you visit some other Tonya pages, and pose the question, we can find out the answer. I honestly don't know!! Keep us informed if you do get an answer!! best wishes
Well, I got that ... ( 1 week ago by atheletic05)
Well, I got that information from Wikipedia so I don't know how reliable it is. I also googled it after I got your comment. The results said that Midori Ito was the first woman to do a triple axle in competition but that Tonya was the first to do one specifically during the short program. It also says that she's the first US woman to do it. Maybe this means that Ito was the first woman from any country ever to do it while Harding was the 1st from America. Like you, I really don't know.
