I remember watching the live broadcast of his retirement ceremony. When they introduced him, the fans at The Garden gave him a standing O that lasted through 2 commercial breaks.
Wayne Gretzky was ... ( 7 months ago by braino2000)
Wayne Gretzky was probably the best at making plays and scoring and raw talent. But he wasn't nearly as complete as howe or orr. Wayne was a pussy. He litterally had the upper body developement of an 8th grader, and couldn't hit or defend himself, orr and howe could do anything they sought fit. And this is coming from a HUGE gretzky fan. Bobby orr and Gordie howe were the true great veterans of the game.

Bravo. Only an idiot would ever deny Gretzky his due as the greatest offensive force hockey has ever seen. It's not likely his records will ever be matched, unless they change a ton of rules or something. Gretzky will forever be the "Great One" in this regard.
But Orr had such a complete game -- and as you can see from the above clip, paid for it with his hockey life. His leg looks like it was eaten by a shark, and he still dominated the league on one friggen leg. Unbelievable, and heroic!!!

Agreed agreed :). People hate Gretzky just because he was a skinny kid and took the game to a whole new level, he played so long because he didn't get injured, because nobody could touch him! Gretzky was great in the mind blowing at certain aspects of the game, but Orr, was just and all around hero. I say an ode to the greatest players of all time.

And what shocked me: Was that I didn't realize that Orr had to retire at the age of 30!!! Holy Cow: I had no idea he was THAT YOUNG!! I thought he had to quit when he was in his late 30's or something like that . . . but NOT 30!!! To me that only makes his injury that more tragic. What a player!!
Orr was the best ... ( 4 months ago by matt75hooper)
Orr was the best hockey player I've ever seen, over the last 40+ years.
There will never be another Orr. They now come from a ridgid cookie cutter non-stop hockey camp foundation. Orr was from the frozen ponds. He learned his trade in 25 below weather. Kids dont carry the puck anymore. The puck goes around the rink like a Pin Ball game. Dump and chase. The game appears faster today----but no one is carrying the puck ! Everyone is chasing it, and then dumping it ! Modern Hockey. Fooey.

call me an idiot but bobby orr was A DEFENCEMAN!!!! In the days of guy lafleur.phil esposito, bobby hull, gretzky was a wanker in a watered down league..the nhl was grabbing guys off the street to fill their rosters.orr played against hardened men who played in the whl ohl qmjhl serious dudes none of the gay europeans of the 80's
Orr actually was ... ( 3 months ago by Bleeney)
Orr actually was finished at the age of 27. He played 10 games for the Bruins in 75-76 (scoring 18 points) when his knee just popped while he was walking through an airport. He had another operation, and played in only a handful of games with the Hawks over the next three years. Done at 27 years old! He should have just been entering the prime years of his career. Gordie Howe calls Orr the greatest player he's ever seen, and said losing him so young is the biggest loss the game has ever endured.
Unbelievable. ... ( 3 months ago by solord)
Unbelievable. Thanks for the info, Bleeney. I started following hockey at the tail end of the 1977-78 season: So I just missed seeing him play. Of course, I've seen him skate on Orr retrospectives, but never had the honor of seeing him live or at least seeing him on TV during game time. So basically Orr had about 8 good seasons. Tough break: Pretty similar to Gale Sayers HOF career: 7 seasons: First 5: All-Pro stats; Year 6: Blew out knee, Done at 27. Year 8: Retired at 28. Great players!

Bleeney is right. You can check the stats.
I was born in 1978 in Czechoslovakia, so his carrer was over, when i was born. I started watching the game when we won World Championship in Prag 1985 and even though it was not very safe then to talk nice about "imperialistic" heroes, my father mentioned great Bobby Orr who defeated our country in 1976 at Canada Cup. Wayne Gretzky was my hero when i grew up, but as i have chance to watch Bobby Orr now and compare, i think he is the best player ever.
And his stats are ... ( 3 months ago by Michal103818)
And his stats are so amazing:
Calder trophy, 3x Hart trophy (won by defensman once since), 8 straight Norris trophies, 2x Conn Smythe trophy and two Stanley Cup winning goals and he won Art Ross Trophy twice!!!! That's not just amazing, for me it is miracle. And he was great character, too. He was visiting children in the hospital 3times a week without getting any publicity as present stars do. His coach found out just by chance about his generosity.
I only wish that ... ( 3 months ago by Bleeney)
I only wish that more of his career was preserved on tape. The Boston station that carried Bruin games apparently destroyed most of their tapes years ago. There were no sports stations on cable back then. Many of the markets in the U.S. didn't even carry hockey on TV. VCRs didn't exist either. It's not like Gretzky or Lemieux, where every moment of their careers is captured on film. What we see of Orr on youtube videos is just the tip of the iceberg. This was Bobby Orr every game of his career.

You forgot that in 1971, he was +124
That's insane, with puny goalie equipment. Today he'd be +250

He was playing against a bunch of pilons though. I doubt he could hold Lidstrom's jock in today's game.

Bleeney you've nailed it here...I was fortunate enough to watch orr in his prime live and on TV...as I did Gretzky and Lemieux and Howe in his last days with the Whalers...I watched many of the icons play all great in their own way (Lafleur,Perreault,Esposito,Bossey,Gretzky,Potvin,D.Savard etc)...IMO there has never been as complete a hockey player as Robert Orr.

It is a little confusing now, because you probably live in Czech republic and i am from Slovakia. I have been living in Ireland in last 4years, so my english improved a lot :) Thanks, but you have learnt a lot of czech, too and it is much harder to learn slavic languages for you than English for us. Dzurilla was voted the best hockey player of the 20-th century in Slovakia, Stastny, Golonka, Bondra and all other great guys finished behind and nobody said a word of doubt :)
Dzurilla was ... ( 1 week ago by harrybawls2008)
Dzurilla was incredible! I thought he was even better then Tretiak. That Canada Cup 76 was magical. And imagine Orr winning MVP in the tournament when he was at the end of his career. He led the entire Team Canada in points.
