My favorite performance of this song. Ever. She really shows the darker side of Mama Rose in that "Why did I do it..." section. I love Patti Lupone, but I just think that her acting was too 'hammy' for this song, whereas Bernadette completely acts it from the emotion in her eyes to her voice. Five stars.

I'm sorry about the sex kitten comment. I did mean to phrase it more subtlety. I cannot think of another way to describe it. It felt almost unnatural to see Ms. Peters portray Mama Rose like that.

This production was very mediocre but the brick wall background was very effective, particularly because Peters is so tiny that the huge shadow cast behind her was very haunting.

The acting is supposed to be hammy, that's the whole point of Rose: she thinks she's this huge star when in reality she has no talent at all and that's why she's never made it and is so jealous of her daughters. Patti's performance is brilliant because she's so camp in the first half of Rose's Tun, then furious/regretful in the middle and delusional again i th end, which is really the crux of the song - even after Rose's realization her bug epiphany she still believes that she's something.

It was bad. Consider this: Gypsy is revived once every 15 years or so. Patti revived it after only 4 years years. Why? Because Peters was both a commercial and critical flop.

I just like how realistic she makes Rose without camping it up. Rosalind did sort of the same thing, except the singing was pretty bad. It just seems so much more believable without all the hammy-ness, to me at least.

I STRONGLY disagree with you. I think each person given this role, should interpret it in their own way. Just because Bernadette's interpretation of Rose was different from Ms. LuPone's does not make it wrong.
