Definitely not an acoustic. The guitar is an electric Gretsch made to his "exacting" specifications. The point I'm making is that Bono does not want to share the limelight, even when it comes to playing, or not playing, guitar.

So, Bono likes dancing with electric Gretsch's made to exacting specifications.. Hey, he's an actor first, so naturally, he needs a prop! It's all a show anyways - a portrayal of an intense emotional experience, and one might feel a bit naked on stage without some added effects.
Yes, he's got a bit of an ego, but if he uses it for good purposes, I think that's alright. He's got guts to try and make a difference, and he does share the limelight in collaborations.
