well, the bald drummer looked mad at him around 3:16 when he missed the key (yea he missed the key, you know it, dont defend him, and i dont blame him, he is a slider guitarist and that was the top excitment of the solo, he just got too tense..)

Butch wasn't mad at all! thats his normal look. Just watch any other ABB video, and you'll see the same face. As for Derek missing the key? Well listen to 1:30 when Derek is into My Favorite things, the drums get out of synch! There is no fuck ups when you are improvising your solo night in and night out. thats what makes this band one of the greatest ever in Rock and Roll. Its the jazz infusion and improv. So to put it nicely. YOU'RE WRONG!

Here is my 2 cents. What he was doin' was playing outside by using the wholetone scale. As an improviser we use such tools to create tension. Its nice to go outside and play. You cant stay inside all the time because it gets boring. Now whether you like it or not is up to you because everybody hears music differently.

I believe he was using the harmonic Scale, which has amny "out of the box" notes in it. If you know how to use it, like Derek, You can make it sound wonderful.

its not necessarily harmonic minor which BTW only has 1 "outside the box" note which isnt really outside the box, its just the leading tone which is very common. it sounds like hes using mostly the Dorian blues scale which is the natural minor scale with a natural 6th and it adds the flat 5th. and its mostly how hes phrasing it, derek is amazing.

No, it's perfectly fine. I have very little knowedge of scales anyways. I knew Dereck generally uses the Harmonic minor scale every now and then. It was an educated guess. But I do appreciate the correction. =]
