This is not a substitute for professional how to play videos, books, or in-person instruction with a professional instructor.
This video would not have been possible without the invaluable professional training videos, books, and workshops produced by Peter Pringle, Carolina Eyck, Pamelia Kurstin, and Lydia Kavina. All of their methods have been, and are still being studied by me.

If you still don't get proper response from the volume antenna, I'd recommend either returning it for service, or have local technician have a look if you don't want to ship it. From what you're telling me, it sounds like it's at least not totally fried.
The one seen here cost $1300 new, but it's discontinued.
Others can range from a couple hundred for the Burns B3, to $400 for the moog etherwave standard, to $800 for the wavefront travelcase, and $1800 for the wavefront Classic.
Other theremins don't have this feature, but you can still make changes to the tone by using effects devices, or simply using the base, and trebble on an amp, or sound system.
Wah pedals too.
:(
does it have 1/4" jacks for amps and effect pedals?
Good luck with your first theremin.
The time required to master the theremin varies with ones lifestyle, and schedule. A student in school, or in work force, might be able to master it in about 2 to 3 years at half an hour to an hour a day.
If you put in 6 to 8 hours a day, perhaps a year, to a year, and a half to learn.
Moog theremins for $350 to 400 from e-bay, and moogmusic, as well as other online shops.
