Instructed by Thomas Grillo on Moog Etherwave Pro theremin.
This is not a substitute for professional how to play videos, books, or in-person instruction with a professional instructor.
This video would not have been possible without the invaluable professional training videos, books, and workshops produced by Peter Pringle, Carolina Eyck, Pamelia Kurstin, and Lydia Kavina. All of their methods have been, and are still being studied by me.

You likely needed to have the adaptor set to provide 110 volts for the US power supply. It sounds like you may well have indeed fed it the full dose of your mains output by mistake.
If you still don't get proper response from the volume antenna, I'd recommend either returning it for service, or have local technician have a look if you don't want to ship it. From what you're telling me, it sounds like it's at least not totally fried.

It's a lot of work regardless of which instrument you use to play music. ;)
The one seen here cost $1300 new, but it's discontinued.
Others can range from a couple hundred for the Burns B3, to $400 for the moog etherwave standard, to $800 for the wavefront travelcase, and $1800 for the wavefront Classic.

Allthough a "good ear", or good relative pitch is certainly a plus when playing the theremin, it turns out that folks with "perfect pitch" often have difficulty listening to, or playing the theremin as it's usually just ever so slightly off pitch by at least a few "cents" even when played by experts. Hwever, perfect pitch players can eventually learn to use their sense of perfect pitch to their favor when playing. ;)

Many theremins can ... ( 4 days ago by ThomasGrillo)
Many theremins can be adjusted with a knob, or switch to produce different tonal charactors as desired. The discontinued Etherwave Pro, seen here, used 6 preset tones, and another setting allowed custom settings to be made like on the Etherwave Standard, which lets you change waveform, and brightness.
Other theremins don't have this feature, but you can still make changes to the tone by using effects devices, or simply using the base, and trebble on an amp, or sound system.
Wah pedals too.

Actually, for only $150 dollars, you can get a Burns B3 theremin from soundslikeburns on the web. Then you would use effects pedals you might have allready to change the sound if you wanted to. Amps can be had for about a hundred, or you can even use your stereo to play it through. Theremins do use quarter inch jacks, but if you run sound into a stereo, you can get little adaptors for that.
Good luck with your first theremin.
Like learning any ... ( 3 days ago by ThomasGrillo)
Like learning any instrument, it does take time, and because it uses a non-tactile interface (you can't touch), it is a bit more challenging to learn, but it is well worth the extra effort that goes into it.
The time required to master the theremin varies with ones lifestyle, and schedule. A student in school, or in work force, might be able to master it in about 2 to 3 years at half an hour to an hour a day.
If you put in 6 to 8 hours a day, perhaps a year, to a year, and a half to learn.
