Since finding this clip I keep coming back for more. The song was originally recorded by Erma Franklin who performed a fantastic soul classic. Then Janis lovingly covered it and made the song hers. But Melissa now owns this song. This performance is just outstanding and so good on so many levels that it just blows me away each time I see it. Joss made a decent tribute cover, and Melissa took the whole event to a different level. It is a divine rock performance and fab clip.

I still keep coming back to this one. It's like an old friend... Melissa doin' Janis, how appropriate for a tribute. They thought that she might be to weak to stick it out the whole song and had her on stage with Joss (1 do enjoy her too). But, Melissa said it was cathartic to let it all out and I believe that she wouldn't have done it better if she would have been well 100%.
Everytime I see this MLE performance, it's like food for my soul!

Melissa said that the 'scream' was a total release for her after all she'd been going through.
At the 3:15 point in video.. she rolled her eyes, cuz she said it was the first time she actually heard what she was saying and how true it is with her and other women fighting through Breast Cancer.

It's a shame that some people can't realize how truly amazing that performance was. Joss was really good, and Melissa was just amazing. What a great rock voice. She has a cooler voice than most guys in today's rock bands. Even right after chemotherapy, Melissa can kick the hell out of a song. Janis would have been proud. A great performance shouldn't be perfect, it should be emotive...it should move you. Just as it did to the audience that night, who were all on their feet.

I'd have to agree with you on that. Everyone keeps comparing this to Janis Joplin's actual version. I mean, it's a tribute, you know. It shouldn't be looked at as a competition. As long as you could feel and move to the song, it's great.

I like Joss Stone, but Jesus, this is a horrible cover of one of my favorite Janis songs. And she's got pitch problems through it too! You really have to be careful when you cover classics.
