Philly had feel in his drumming. When he played it was like there was still a whole jazz orchestra on stage, but it was just him. He had style!

Philly Joe was on lots of sessions with the top jazz guys. Do a Google for a discography of his recordings. In the late 50s, he was the top hard bop drummer. Blue Note's Alfred Lion was particularly fond of him and used him on many albums. Perhaps surprisingly (because he usually played delicately), Bill Evans said that he was his favorite drummer.
Philly Joe did not often play with Monk, so these videos are kinda rare.
