e Jacobite cause—to restore the House of Stuart (known as the House of Stewart in Scotland) to the throne of Great Britain—to a decisive defeat. The Jacobites—most of them Highland Scots—supported the claim of Charles Edward Stuart (aka "Bonnie Prince Charlie" or "The Young Pretender") to t
he throne; the British army, under the Duke of Cumberland, younger son of the Hanoverian sovereign, King George II, supported his father's cause. The aftermath of the battle was brutal and earned the victorious general the name "Butcher" Cumberland. Charles Edward Stuart eventually left Britain and
went to Rome, never to attempt to take the throne again. Civil penalties were also severe. New laws attacked the Highlanders' clan system, and even highland dress was outlawed.

Scotland will gain independence and reap all the benefits that entails. As to monarchy, I appreciate and respect the feelings of the modern day jacobite supporters but I think that Scotland can do well without monarchy as a nation state ready to take its rightful place among others. I hope that I am alive to see it and that someday I can go to Scotland and feel the land of my ancestors under my feet. That will be a happy day for me indeed! Alba Gu Brath!

I completely agree with what you say. Historically, Scotland has always been a separate cultural and political entity. It is also immensely rich in industry and natural resources (not least the oil and natural gas from the North Sea and the Atlantic!), and could go at it alone if the Scots should decide to break loose from the UK. Scotland has every right to become independent again, and personally I think it's just a matter of time before that happens.

i'm english, but you scots are fantastic fighters. you've always struck fear into the enemy. apparently in the second world war, the germans used to shit themselves when they heard the bagpipes. it's a shame the english always want to takes what's not theres!. i think england is now reaping what it had sown, during the days of the empire. . i've met a lot of lovely scottish people. nicer than the english. i hope you get your independence. when you do i'm going to live in the highlands!

After the Act of Union in 1707, Scotland and England became one country, Great Britain.
It was the British Army (including many Scots) against predominantly Highland Scots who started the rebellion under Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745.
The rebellion was finally crushed at the battle of Culloden in 1746. The victorious British soldiers then went on a rampage of murder, killing many innocent Scots.
No regiment in the British Army has Culloden as a Battle Honour.

The rebellion started well - incredible success at the Battle of Preston Pans. They moved south and eventually threatened London. Things fell apart and the Scottish Highlanders retreated north to their annihilation at Culloden.
Scotland is 5 million people the same as the city of London.
Could an independent Scotland support its own army, navy and airforce?

I don't think Osama Binladen is going to invade anywhere.Guerilla warfare and terrorism is his method.Even the might of Russia and the U.S.can do little against these tactics.
An independent Scotland would be part of NATO and the UN. Freedom and Independence is more than worrying about enemies,it's about making friends.
