As an American, I can make an educated guess as to why Marenghi's accent might sound Australian to some of us.
One of the main ways we identify Australian accents is by the way the "I" sound becomes an "oy/ahh-ee" sound: "Too right" sounds like "Too roit" to us. And we tend to think of British accents as being very posh and proper, ignoring the sort of non-upper-class British accents where a similar 'I -> oy' shift occurs. So when we hear that shift, even in a Brit, we think "Australian!".

I love the TV equivalent of a student exchange, what with Stephen Merchant on this and Marenghi (Holness) being the IT guy on The Office.

the funniest is garth's crying at the end. I only wish it went on longer. Same in episode 3 after he's killed skipper the eyechild! This series should be continued as there were at least 40 episodes made!
