Not many people are aware of the fact that this song was originally an album cut by The Leaves in mid 1966. It was released as a single later that year by an obscure group called "The Boston Tea Party." The Monkees wound up recording it because a clause in Boyce & Hart's contract stipulated that all of the Monkees' albums had to have at least one of their tunes on it (the "Head" soundtrack being the one exception). This is the mono single version, which came out several months before the album.

I love the Monkees and recently discovered the Cowsills videos on Youtube, didn't know they were the inspiration for the Partridge Family. I can't believe it but I'm currently more obsessed with the Cowsills than the Monkees!

I think its funny how many people love to rag on the Monkees. Musically they had some really great songs. Even if they had studio musicians the music was good. Especially their first 3 LP's. Many bands today rely on studio musicians and no one criticises them.

Like it or hate this song-- if you guys saw the people that played this song, lets put it this way- they were a great cover! BTW-i have been playing guitar since 1968, in '71 i bought one of the "Royal Guardsman"amps by Vox for 45.00, blew it up, thats what ya see in the background, the "Monkee"amp.Pete townshend used 3 super beatles, as did the Beatles, Kujunia--you are a kid, and go and play with your little ibanez practice amp, and hit "METAL" The best song they did! Blow it up!

I love the little thing the guitar does near the end of each verse that I can only descibe as, for lack of a better term; "East-Indian". In my opinion, this is a better version than the one found on "Pisces..." although I think it suffers the same fate as a lot of pop and rock songs from the sixties: Tiny-sounding drums.
