My high school is doin a production of this, and Alexander Bernstein (Leonard Bernstein's son) came to our school and actually helped us perfect this scene. As a Shark, this was one of my absolute favorite scenes to watch and do.

The leap and catch is a standard dance move. The use of Broadway dancing is an interpretation of violence. It's not supposed to be realistic, it's artistic expression something completely lacking in almost all films today.
