Video of me filming my customized PSP! The quality is quite poor so there's alot of text fading in and out to help explain whats going on. Okay so thats that read below if your interested in customizing your own PSP.
***PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS AS THE README FILES FOR DOWNGRADING etc ALWAYS READ THE README FILES THAT COME IN PACKAGES!!***
Downgrading:
This method is the first step to getting Custom Firmware. For this whole video my PSP was using Dark_AleX's Open Edition Firmware so this what this guide will be on. Downgrading will downgrade your PSP's firmware to the 1.5 version. Why? Because all OE Custom Firmware's are based on upgrading from 1.5 if your doing a clean install and not just updating from a previous Custom Firmware.
Example going from
3.10 OE-A to 3.30 OE
Because of different firmware versions and PSP motherboards there are different downgraders for different PSP's here's the list:
If your on 2.71 there a few ways to downgrade here is the first one:

Make sure you read the README File in the Downgrader package.
Okay if your on 3.10 and above the best thing for you is the 3.50 Downgrader. This involves a number of things. First of all you need to update to 3.50.
Note: Due to Sony finding out this expliot for 3.50 They released 3.51 Firmware Soon after. Make sure you find the 3.50 updater around on the internet and not updating via Network update or The Sony website!

This article explains the downgrader and what you need, but im going to tell you about it anyway!
Basically this expliot is for 3.50 Firmware. So if your between on 3.10 or more say 3.30 you would simply grab the 3.50 Offical Sony Update Firmware then download the downgrader for 3.50 from the link I gave you for this expliot you need a game called "Lumines" The following version for this expliot work:
Lumines, Lumines Greatest Hits, Lumines Platinum Edition are all fine.
LUMINES II DOES NOT WORK!!!
And make sure that get the EU or US version. Check the code that it one of the following:
If you get the EU (ULES00043)
If you get the US (ULUS10002)

BEFORE DOWNGRADING FROM 3.50 CHECK THAT YOUR MOTHERBOARD! THE FOLLOWING LINK DISPLAYS WHERE YOUR MOTHERBOARD CODE WOULD BE AND WHAT NUMBER IT IS:

IF YOUR MOTHERBOARD IS A TA-082 AND YOU GO TO CUSTOM FIRMWARE THEN YOU LOCK YOURSELF OUT OF SONY OFFICIAL FIRMWARE. HOWEVER YOU WILL BE ABLE TO UPGRADE TO NEW OE FIRMWARES WHEN THEY COME OUT. WHEN RUNNING THE 3.50 DOWNGRADER IT WILL PATCH YOUR MOTHERBOARD FOR YOU. THIS PATCH ENABLES YOUR MOTHERBOARD WITH CUSTOM FIRMWARE.

3.51 Downgrader.
Currently there is no downgrader and no OFFICIAL Information about when it's released. If your on 3.51 there a few things you can do.
1. Replace your motherboard. I don't know how to do this but others do. Google around for help.
2. Hang tight! Hang in there and wait for the downgrader.
Thats about it on downgrading. But we warned:
Downgrading a system CAN BE RISKY, and MAY CAUSE YOUR SYSTEM TO BE INOPERABLE (or "bricked"). Also, you will be voiding your system's warranty by using this hack. If you're willing to take the plunge, feel free. Once you get to 1.50, we highly recommend that you install one of Dark_Alex's custom firmware packages, to ensure compatibility with current game titles.
Next up is Modding this XMB (Menus):

The forum post states that they work on 3.30 OE, but you are safe to use them on 3.40 OE and 3.40 OE-A

Okay cool, but how do I get them on my PSP?
Well you do need Custom Firmware for this because you need to access recovery mode which was briefly shown in my video. If your on custom firmware then follow these instructions carefully. Because doing this wrong can run the risk of semi-bricking your PSP.
Okay so if you don't know already to access recovery mode turn the PSP power off if it's already on then turn it back on while holding the power button up and then r trigger pressing down. This should bring it up. Once your on there go to Advanced and go to the Flash0 Directory. You will need your USB cable for this so make sure it's plugged in and connected to your computer. Okay so Hopefully your computer has detected the USB connection between your PSP and Computer, next go to my computer and find a device called "Removable Disk (E:) Your drive letter may be different to mine! So once your in your Flash0 directory open up your theme pack you have and put all files with the file format of .rco in the x:/vsh/resource folder and then put all .pdf files in the x:/font folder.
Note: You also put background files into the x:/vsh/resource folder they are usually in a bmp format.
Recovery Mode:
As you saw in my video I breifly showed the recovery mode menu on my PSP. One of the main reasons your going to want to have Custom Firmware is because of this handy feature. Recovery Menu is a seperate program on your PSP and can be accessed even when your PSP bricks (Mostly)
NOTE: Only Custom Firmwares have the ability. Offical Sony Firmware does not.
