Final scene was to show the students had learned the life lessons Keating (Williams) had tried to teach them, ultimately losing his job. Keating had taught his students to think for themselves/break with convention (i.e.courtyard scene), to look at life from a different perspective (standing on desks) & instead of calling him Mr. Keating, to call him Oh Captain, My Captain (ref. toWhitmans poem written about Abraham Lincoln shortly....

...after his assassination, a man Whitman admired).The scene captures all 3 elements; students breaking convention & thinking for themselves, standing on desks showing their perspective had changed, & then finally oh captain, my captain a salute to their fallen leader. Showing Keating they had understood him & had learned. Highly recommend this movie, its fun/entertaining & powerful/thought provoking, & Williams finest hour.

My English class actually did this for a teacher who was retiring, as she'd shown us the film in the first place. She cried and everything. Then bought us all ice cream.

this scene was fantastic, we watched this movie in english. after neil's death, it was so sad and cryful, but this scene made it better. this is an awesome movie, best ever watched at school! todd is my favourite character. i cant believe how much his actor has changed.
