Joel Osteen: A Case Study in American Religion
Hello and welcome to another broadcast of the White Horse Inn where we are launching our new year-long series, "Christless Christianity: The American Captivity of the Church." In the last two programs we looked at Christless Christianity in general and Crossless Christianity which is really the heart of the problem as we are assessing it here. And then in this program we want to take a look at a specific example of what we are talking about. We realize an extreme example, but it does reflect a wider tendency and drift towards Christless Christianity that probably evangelicals would not have been attracted to in the 30s and 40s and 50s but today Joel Osteen is now considered an Evangelical leader.
If Charles Finney's legacy helps us to understand how we arrived at the current crisis, Joel Osteen the Pastor of Lakewood church in Houston, Texas may be the clearest example in contemporary American religion. Name it/claim it, heath and wealth, or prosperity gospel, these are nicknames for a heresy that in many respects is an extreme version of perhaps the most typical focus of American Christianity today more generally. Basically God's there for you and your happiness. He has some rules, and principles for getting what you want out of life and if you follow them you can have what you want. Just declare it and prosperity will come to you. Although explicit proponents of the so-called "prosperity gospel" may be fewer than their influence suggests, its big names and best-selling authors, T.D. Jakes, Benny Hinn, Joel Osteen and Joyce Meyer are purveyors of a pagan world-view with a peculiarly American flavor. Its basically what Martin Luther called the "theology of glory." How can I climb the ladder and attain
the glory here and now that God has actually promised for us after a life of suffering. The contrast is the "theology of the cross." The story of God's merciful descent to us at great personal cost, the message the Apostle Paul acknowledged was offensive and foolishness to Greeks.
Every few years a religions best-seller sweeps the nation with the message of self-help. Norman Vincent Peale's The Power of Positive-Thinking, Robert Schuller's TV ministry and series of best-sellers, Bruce Wilkinson's The Prayer of Jabez, and other sensations have come and gone. Each time the media treats the appearance of a work in this vein as though it were a new phenomenon, but the success of this genre has long been established. The attractions of Americans to this version of the glory story is evident in the astonishing success of Joel Osteen's runaway best-seller Your Best Life Now: Seven Steps to Living at Your Full Potential and the sequel, the recently released Become a Better You. Beyond his charming personality and folksy style, Osteen's phenomenal attraction is no doubt related to his simple and soothing sampler of the American gospel--a blend of Christian and cultural elements that he picked up not through any formal training but as the son of Baptist, turned prosperity evangelist, who was a f
avorite on the Trinity Broadcasting Network. However, gone are the eccentric caricatures of prosperity tele-evangelism with it flamboyant style and over the top rhetoric, and bad hair. At least in the televised broadcasts of his services there are no healing lines with people falling or fainting when the preacher blows on them. He doesn't send blessed prayer cloths or speak endlessly of sowing seed in his ministry in order to reap their desired miracle.
The pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, which now owns the Compaq Center, and is now the largest church in America does not come across as a flashing evangelist with jets and yachts , but as a charming next door neighbor who always has something nice to say. However Joel Osteen is definitely a leader of a new generation of prosperity evangelists. His explicit drumbeat of health and wealth, or word-faith teaching is communicated in the terms and the ambiance that might be difficult to distinguish from most mega-churches and other seeker driven ministries. In this broadcast we are going to take a look at Joel Osteen as an example of that increasing creeping fog that we are calling Christless Christianity.

You see, this is why backsliding Christians, and sinners despise us Christians so much, is stuff like that. Back in the day(1700s) they wouldn't tolerate something so indirect. They wouldn't even have time for that. I love Joel Osteen and all, but him of all preachers? A son of a very outstanding preacher. This is disappointing.

He encourages people to fork over the MONEY! You know one thing that irks me about HIS church,(it's NOT the OAIS OF LOVE anymore but the the JOEL OLSTEEN MINISTRIES)is that where does all those $80 million dollars that he rakes in each year go to? I'd like to know what charities he's funding with that? Is he helping the poor? Some people might not agree with the Catholic church but I can say one thing that when you donate to the catholic church YOU KNOW WHERE you money is going to!

This is really sad indeed. I wonder if Mr.Osteen would have the guts to preach the message of Jesus on denying yourself, picking up your cross and following Him, even if that would give you personal moments of the desert and personal Gethsemane's, then Mr.Osteen would probably need to sell the former NBA auditorium because attendance would drop like a burned out (Houston?) Rocket!

Who knows what he does with the money - I don't think he's yet to the level of Benny Hinn or Kenneth Copeland, but his teaching alone scares me.
As for the catholic church - yes, you know where your money is going to - to settle child-molestation lawsuits & make more spiffy gold-covered garments for the pope.
That second half of ... ( 1 week ago by AUDREYoftheISLEofELY)
That second half of your comment was uncalled for. I get so sick of people ssuming that the Catholic priests are the ONLY ministers that have molested children. If you have NO REAL idea where the money goes then you shouldn't make rude and unbased comments.

We have a resale shop in our church and we make about $5,000 a month profilt on it and ALL of it goes straight back to our social ministries office to pay the poor of our churche's light bills, rent food, etc. They can even get free vouchers so that they can get FREE clothing for themselves or their children at our store also. I don't see other churches doing that sort of work to help the poor.
There might very ... ( 1 week ago by AUDREYoftheISLEofELY)
There might very well be other denominations that do that sort of charity work but I'm just saying that I know for sure what kind of charity work the Catholic church does as I am deeply involved in the ministry work at my church and I SEE where the money all goes to.
My comments are ... ( 1 week ago by Believing1Thomas)
My comments are certainly not baseless. The catholic church's history is full of abuse - abuse of power, children, women, "heretics" - the list is long and horrible.
The wealth of the catholic church is well-known - it's use is less known.
You don't see it in ... ( 1 week ago by Believing1Thomas)
You don't see it in other churches because you only pay attention to catholic churches, apparently. I don't know of a single protestant church that doesn't do something like this.
Why do you NEED A ... ( 1 week ago by AUDREYoftheISLEofELY)
Why do you NEED A CHUCRH to teach you the bible? That is what the Holy Spirit does. He teaches us the bible as we read it. Sure it is important to hear the spoken word at church but what about receiving communion? I feel sad for people that are not receiving communion. One of the greatest graces is to receive communion.
WEll, if you study ... ( 1 week ago by Believing1Thomas)
WEll, if you study your Bible, you don't need a church to teach you, though a pastor can lead & help. We're suppose to attend church for prayer, fellowship, encouragement, and studying the word. That's what the Bible says to do.
"receiving communion" isn't a "grace" - it's a ritual. It's intended to remind us of Jesus' sacrifice for us.
Maybe it is and WAS ... ( 1 week ago by AUDREYoftheISLEofELY)
Maybe it is and WAS but why do people always have to focus on the Catholics and what wrong they have done? Why don't they hunt down the many PROTESTANT ministers that have molested children also? Why don't they expose the fraud in those churches too? I guess that the people LOVE to hate Catholics based on things that MOSTY happened hundreds of years ago. What you are talking about happened hundreds or years ago and doesn't fit with the churches image now.
... ( 1 week ago by gaberosswilliamz)
AUDREYoftheISLEofELY and Believing1Thomas, you both do have legitimate points. Churches should be more genuine rooted in the principles of Judeo-Christianity. The denomination of the Chatholic Church may be a well respected church and yes the personel of that Church may committ shamefull mistakes(what church didn't?). Every Christian is suppose to be in this together, because we are all God's workmenship and we need to be real servants of God and stop that money hogging and make a difference.
I'm not focusing on ... ( 1 week ago by Believing1Thomas)
I'm not focusing on catholics, per se, but more on the church and the teachings of the church. The long litany of problems in the catholic church are symptomatic of the underlying disease, i.e. SIN. Sin is taught and encouraged, by calling people to worship idols and pray to persons other than God, by placing more emphasis on a mere human - Mary - than on the God of all creation.
Well the Catholic ... ( 1 week ago by AUDREYoftheISLEofELY)
Well the Catholic church doesn't encourage ANYONE to worship ANY IDOLS. Let me set the facts straight CATHOLICS DO NOT WORSHIP MARY!! We also do not worship any saints either. But we do follow the ten commandments and one of the most important ones is to HONOR your father and mother and since Mary IS the MOTHER of Jesus we JUST HONOR her. That's a huge difference in worshiping her. We place ALL emphisis of our prayer on the Creator and Jeus Christ asking for our needs in HIS name only.
Completly untrue. ... ( 1 week ago by Believing1Thomas)
Completly untrue. Catholics PRAY TO MARY.
I used to be a ... ( 1 week ago by BrotherOfTheSon)
I used to be a Catholic. Of course we prayed to Mary. It is all about her in the Catholic church. Jesus is always a baby or dying forever on the cross, with Mary tending for him or near him. We had to ask her to placate the "angry" Jesus. No different from a lot of mother/child religions of ages past. I found it intersting that when Jesus disciples said your mother and your brothers is waiting outside to speak to you He replied that his followers are my mother and brothers and sisters.
Awesome point, ... ( 1 week ago by Believing1Thomas)
Awesome point, brother! One I sometimes forget. In truth, Jesus never (in his ministry) treated Mary with any more deference than any other woman.
Well they MIGHT ... ( 1 week ago by AUDREYoftheISLEofELY)
Well they MIGHT pray to her but as I said NONE of the Catholics that I KNOW worships her and those are two different things. If they do worship her then they are sinning indeed. All of our prayers must lead us to Jesus.
I found prayers TO ... ( 1 week ago by Believing1Thomas)
I found prayers TO Mary on the web site you sent to me through my Inbox. If you don't know of any Catholics who pray to Mary, then you have a really limited circle of Catholic friends. At my work, a "christian" discussion group spent months discussing "Mariology" because of what I've described.
No, worshipping and praying aren't 2 different things. They go together.
Well you must be ... ( 1 week ago by AUDREYoftheISLEofELY)
Well you must be MISREADING what I've said. I said that I know that people might pray to Mary but I do not know anyone that worships her. Please REREAD the comment posted above you. People can pray to anyone that they want to but that doesn't mean that they are worshiping them.
I haven't misread ... ( 1 week ago by Believing1Thomas)
I haven't misread what you've said - you've just ignored what I've said. I've been telling you, praying and worshipping are effectively the same thing.

Awesome point, Tr1n1r3dman!
The bottom line is, no matter how hard they try to spin it, catholics pray to Mary, ergo they worship her.
