fierysorm123: You're correct, hydroponics does not use soil. At most, loose gravel/clay pellets/lava rock is used to give the plant support, but that's it.
This project is a cute idea, but don't these type of passive wick-feed waterers quickly end up killing the plant from root-rot?

i was wondering if you could use other grow mediums suck as growrocks? i like rodgerdodger5 comment n i think that will try that but noctillion did bring up a valid point bout the chance of root rot because the roots have a potentail to be submerged in water and could stagnate the water. i say its a good "add-on" model n i would add an airstone

Not hydroponics at all... hydroponics is automatically known for self watering hence HYDRO and movement of water ponics.. secondly your set up falls under passive hydroponics only hydroponics doesnt use soil...try a nutrient water with a 50/50 perlite and vermiculite this way u can control the nutrient levels.. all soil will do is cause rot you need to force O2 to ur root system soil will only hold water and not force O2 into roots after feeding..

Yes, my response was for my own satisfaction. I'm constantly battling illogical and fallacious statements. As a former teacher reading the poor text and worse logic I find on the web and especially here on Youtube helps me realize why the US (and the world?) has been deteriorating so rapidly. It seems a lot of the contributors here cannot think themselves out of a box which probably means that they can't do basic math or science. Poor logic means that they can't anticipate the future very well.

Good idea! Although it has little to do with hydroponic indeed. Hydro/Aeroponic includes putting oxygen and nutrients into the water, since no soil is used. Nevertheless, youve constructed a nice self-watering pot. Cheers!
