The purpose of the sand is that they can measure from the indent you make in the sand closest to the line you jump from. If your butt goes down behind your feet, they measure from your butt and that stinks, but its the way they can keep it fair.

This was flawed..the material used in the run up track allowed for greater spring and its now banned.
