I see what you mean, bbennett04. I don't have the absolute finest musical ear, but I do have a pretty good one, and I did hear a few notes here and there throughout the song that were ever so slightly under pitch.

I am very familiar with Brenda Russell and her work as a writer. Fantastic writer. She is still, in my opinion, a subpar vocalist. That's the beauty or music. It's all subjective to the listener. She sounds like half decent Karaoke. And when I put my version on the tube I will be sure to send you the link so you can see how it really should be done.

The bottom line is......Brenda Russell is a BRILLIANT SONGWRITER not neccessarily a great singer. Which is fine; there are MANY instances where she will WRITE a song for someone and they of course will perform/sing it much better than she can! That is NOT UNCOMMON in the business. I mean she wrote Please Pardon Me and Chaka Khan sang it. But there is no way in HELL Brenda could even TRY to sing the song even close to Chaka. Brenda is a SONGWRITER FIRST, then a singer!!!!

I think Brenda & Brian Russell actually recorded Please Pardon Me first. But I agree Chaka's version is better. Of course she recorded Get Here and If Only for One Night first and they were also made popular by IMO better singers, Oleta Adams and Luther Vandross. Brenda's got some songwriting talent!

please don't do the 'someone else can sing better than her argument'..she is a songwriter first...most songwriters write songs with someone in mind they'd like to perform it...they get great pleasure hearing someone else sing the living daylights out of a song they've written! for instance dolly parton wrote that tune whitney houston nailed...'i will always love you' dolly was like...yeahhhhhhhhhhh! so don't compare songwriter/singer to singers in most cases its pointless.

agreed, PLUS, most songwriters love hearing their songs interpreted different ways. They also make an amazing living off royalties off a big hit like Oleta had with Get Here. Best thing to do is to enjoy the sound of Brenda's interpretation and Oleta's.

the people who are writing that Russell doesn't sing well must be judging her by this video, and there I'd agree, she doesn't sound good here at all. But it's a different story on her records. Listen to the recorded versions of "Kiss Me With the Wind", "Dinner with Gershwin", "So Good So Right" and others and you'll hear why Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan, Earth Wind and Fire, Donna Summer and so many others have recorded her songs.

Thios was a cool song. I remember when she came to a radio station in L.A. and they went through all the songs she wrote and she discussed what she was doing and/or the story behind it.
When they played this she said she was freestlying this song while doing the dishes alone and she said 15 minutes later she wrote it. Everyone was amazed that she was doing a household chore when she created this.
